The design of this trivet is inspired by the spiral patterns on a sunflower head. This pattern consists of interconnecting spirals, where the number of left spirals and the number of right spirals are successive Fibonnaci numbers. This pattern is an extremely efficient method of packing seeds within the sunflower head, and of course is also visually stunning! The same spiral patterns occur in many natural forms including pinecones, artichokes, and pineapples.
